“He Acts Like An Asshole”

That was the statement given by Noah Jeremiah Thomas on why he killed his girlfriends 3-year old son, Michael-Kekoa Ravenell last week in my home town.
It started early in the day when Michael wouldn’t get out of bed when asked, wouldn’t walk home from the playground after falling off a toy, wouldn’t eat a snack that Thomas prepared and finally (god forbid) Michael got up from the love seat where Noah Thomas had thrown him. That was all it took for Noah to get angry and kill Michael. All of this while he was also “taking care of” Michaels 18-month old sister.
How many things have gone wrong in our society, and specifically the City of Tacoma, when a 3-year old child is murdered because he upset a 25-year old moron that had no business watching this boy to begin with? The kicker? Child Protective Services had an open case on this family at the time of Michaels death.
We hear bad news every day and I thought I was immune to it until this happened. Maybe the fact that I am a new father again makes this hit closer to me than usual. Why aren’t the citizens of Tacoma outraged that this was allowed to happen?
Who do we blame? The mother for leaving her son with a man that has a history of violence towards children? The boyfriend for committing the murder? CPS for leaving a child in an environment like this with a known child abuser, a man that hurt his own child in the past?
I don’t know how we fix this, or where to go from here but something needs to change so this type of thing doesn’t happen again.
