Black Eye

Posted on April 25, 2008 - Filed Under Baby Life, Life, Parenting, Year One

An event that will nominate us for parents of the year resulted in a black eye for Alexander last night.

Alexander has a “Twist ‘N Fold Yellow Bus Pop-Up Play Tent” that he loves to play in. We usually set it up in the living room and put some of his things inside like the Elmo chair and various toys.

See these happy kids playing in bus? That is how things are supposed to work, and how it usually works in our house when the bus is setup for Alex.

Last night Travis thought it would be funny to have one of our dogs, Comet, get into the bus with Alexander so they could share some fun bus-tent time together. Comet, for those that don’t know, is our large bull terrier mix that is *very* protective of Alexander. Comet is a big boy, probably in the 80 pound range (I’m being generous), and he thinks that he is the size of a chihuahua, always wanting to climb on our laps and cuddle. It’s like having a large bear want to sit on your lap. He’s a true ‘nanny dog‘ in every send of the term.

I’m also of the opinion that Comet is somewhat retarded, an opinion that generates mini arguments in the house from time to time.

So Comet and Alexander are sharing some time in the tent-bus when Comet decides to jump through one of the windows. Remember when I said Comet was retarded? His dog mind thought he could fit that bag ass body of his through a tiny bus-tent window. Not good.

The bus-tent collapsed and toppled over, which sent Alexander face first into the hardwood floor. Comet bailed, probably knowing that he had caused a problem when he heard Alex start screaming.

The end result is that Alex had an instant black eye and an hour later it had turned into a pretty impressive shiner. It looks like he was hit with a baseball or a great right hook. Take your pick.

Toni wanted me to take a picture of it but I felt so bad for the little guy that I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I was pretty mad about it when it first happened, and thought it a a bonehead move on the part of Travis but once I had time to think about it I was fine. He was trying to play with his little brother and have some fun and honestly, things like that are gonna happen. He is gonna get bumps and bruises as a little boy and I need to realize that. I think it just scared me a little bit and that turned into anger.

I have not had a chance to take a look at him this morning, he was half-asleep when I left for work so I’ll get to see how it looks when I get home. Will probably post a photo of it later.

– Update @ 11:40am

I just spoke to Toni and she tells me that the black eye is pretty small and he looks fine.  Kind of surprised by that considering what it looked like last night but happy.  She says that kids are super resilient and I shouldn’t worry about it.
