Freezing With The Tacoma Rainiers

Posted on April 21, 2008 - Filed Under Baseball, Events, Sports, Tacoma

This past Saturday night we landed VIP tickets to the Tacoma Rainiers vs the Sky Sox to get our first taste of “spring” baseball.

Spring in most cities means a decent sunny afternoon with temps in the 50-60 degree range.  In Tacoma it meant 39 degrees at the start of the game, with snow and rain showers an hour before the game starts.  I know this is nothing for people living in colder areas of the country, but this was the coldest sporting event I had ever sit through.

Half of the players were dressed like ninjas, with full black face hoods while the other half looked like they were dressed for a day on the tundras.  We laughed at the ninja guys early, and by the second inning we wished that we had full face hoods ourselves.

We braved the frigid temperatures until the 4th inning when Toni and I finally decided that we’d leave when the inning was over.  At this point it was 36 degrees and so bad that we were begging for players to strike out, even rooting against the home team.  When the inning was finished we ran to the car for warmth.  Heat never felt so good.

Now about the VIP tickets… What a great deal!  The Tacoma Rainiers have two areas in Cheney Stadium named the Venture Bank Gold Club where VIP members are allowed to enjoy a private area of the stadium, complete with free drinks and snacks.   The areas also contain large flat panel screens so you can catch various scores from other sporting events.

The first and original Gold Club area is pretty small and it gets cozy fast.   We decided to check out the second Gold Club located along the right field line and it’s definitely a better area.  The second club has indoor/outdoor access along the right field line and the action is literally inches away from you from this area.  I can imagine in the summer that this area will be packed the the perfect place to catch the game.

The VIP tickets also include great seats.  We happen to have front row seats just left of home plate next to the visitor dugout.

We were impressed enough with the VIP package that we are seriously thinking about picking up the 24-game package this week.  The price is a steal when you consider the cost of the seats, drinks and snacks.  Package also includes reserved parking and a private entrance to the stadium.

I am really impressed with how the new owners of the Rainiers are handling things and look forward to the future.
