Dirt Eater

Sorry for the lack of updates this week, I started my new job and have been pretty busy getting adjusted to the new schedule.   More about that in a later post.

Spring has finally sprung in our area and we actually had some sun yesterday.  This gave us a change to setup a “baby pen” in the back yard around a small sand pit.  The sand pit is surrounded by a plastic octagon fence and Alex has lots of toys including a bucket, shovel and various digging tools.

When I first saw the octagon setup  I told Toni that it looked like Alex was in early training for cage fighting because it looks just like the UFC setup.  She was not amused.

Alex spent time picking up sand, dropping the sand and laughing.  That was his entertainment until mom decided to put sun screen on him from head to toe.   Let me just get this out of the way right now…  sand and sun screen do not mix well with a 17 month old boy.

A few minutes after the sun screen was applied Alex tried to eat a handful of sand, had dropped a few scoops of sand on his head, blinded Travis in one eye from an errant toss and finally managed to get sand down the front of his shirt and pants.

Seriously, eating dirt?  Do all boys do this?  If so how did we ever evolve.  In fact he tried to eat the dirt three times!  The first time it was kind of funny and he thought it was gross.  The second time it was just gross for both of us and the third time I actually started to worry about his capability to learn things.  Maybe he is just determined. :)

The sun screen and sand mixture on his head was impossible to remove by normal means so I had to plunk him in the bathtub and rinse him off several times which made Alex mad.

Can’t wait for the summer so we can spend more time outside.
