Jack Thompson And Dr. Phil Blame Video Games

Posted on April 24, 2007 - Filed Under Games, Life, News

Last week was a nightmare for the people involved with the Virginia Tech shooting and only hours after the shooting attorney Jack Thompson was on Fox News placing blame on the video game industry.

Jack Thompson has been doing this for a long time, coming out of the woodwork to blame video games for every school shooting in the U.S. since the Columbine tragedy in 1999.  Compared to Jack Thompson, Dr. Phil is a relative rookie to blaming video games for youth violence but he was quick to blame video games for the shooting that same night on Larry King.

In a letter to Microsoft last Wednesday Jack Thompson writes:

“Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable (for) the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill.”

MSNBC takes a responsible look at the issue and today the San Francisco Chronicle also points out that Jack is a fearmonger.  Both outlets deserve credit for taking the time to investigate before giving media time to Jack Thompson.

Kotaku has a great feature called “Dissecting Jack’s Lies” that debunks everything Jack Thompson says during the Fox News interview.

Bill Harris also takes a shot at Jack and Dr. Phil on his Dubious Quality blog including a link to The School Shooter:  A Threat Assessment Perspective by the FBI which describes 46 areas of possible concern.
