Linksys WRT55AG Router Crash Fixed

Posted on January 3, 2007 - Filed Under General, News

I purchased a Linksys WRT55AG Router last year and it’s performed flawlessly until a few days ago when it started to show some strange behavior.

The lights on the front panel would flash and blink, then go out, and come back on only to repeat the process over and over again.   I was losing my connection every time this happened which was around every 3 seconds.

It looked like the router was power cycling itself off and on and I thought it was either overheating or had finally died.

I could not connect to the router configuration because it would reset every few seconds, and I couldn’t think of anything that would allow me to try and reconfigure the router so I decided I would perform a hard reset.

There is a small pinhole sized hole on the back of the WRT55AG that allows you to reset the router.  With the router still plugged in, I pushed and held the reset button for 30 seconds.

The lights on the front of the router cleared and came back on — and stayed on.  No more power cycling!  I connected to the router configuration page and set everything back up and things have been running smooth for he past week without problems.   I have no idea what caused the router to power cycle like that, but I know that in my case a hard reset fixed it so I wanted to share the information in case someone else comes across a similar problem.

Could this have happened when the lightening struck your neighborhood yesterday morning around 10:30?

Might be related to the power issues we’ve had the past few weeks. This happened just after Xmas.
