Storming Into Christmas

Posted on December 21, 2006 - Filed Under General, News, Tacoma

We have been dealing with nasty wind and rain storms the past week in Western Washington and it has not been fun.

Wind speed topped at 69 miles per hour at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and well over 100 miles per hour around Mt. Rainier.   Wind like that in this area is incredible, and when it hits there is a ton of damage from falling trees landing on homes, cars and people.  Our neighbors had a tree fall onto their house puncturing a hole deep into the side of their home.  My aunt lost part of her roof and had some flooding from a loose sun tube light in her kitchen and all of that was minor when you look at the big picture.

We briefly lost power in South Tacoma a few times but it’s nothing compared to the folks that have been without power going on a week now.  Add cold temps and lots of rain to that and you can imagine what people are going through.

We lost our cable service for a few days so that meant no TV or Internet and a funny thing happened — we spent time together as a family.  We gathered in the living room most nights to play video games or watch movies and had a great time.  The minute the cable was restored we scattered back to our corners of the house.  It was just odd.

Local newspaper has lots of pictures of the damage available here.
